The official poster for Season 2 of ‘This Is Us’ has arrived ahead of the September premiere. But what’s missing from the new key art?

More from This Is Us

On Wednesday, This Is Us fans received an unexpected treat. No, it wasn’t a trailer for Season 2, or even the title of the first episode. (Although, we’re feverishly anticipating both to drop.) Our treat? The official poster for the second season. With just one glance, you’ll be ugly crying before you can even stop and wonder why. That’s the This Is Us effect at work.

The poster looks strikingly similar to that of the first season, with Pearsons in various emotional states scattered into separate squares and rectangles. Its minimalism and keen ability to grab the heartstrings make it a clever marketing campaign and a nod to fans all at once. This season’s poster welcomes the additions of William, Tess and Annie, the teenage Big Three, and Sophie, all of whom have been upped to regulars for Season 2. However, with all of this wonderful imagery working in the favor of This Is Us, we couldn’t help but notice one glaring albeit minor problem with the photo of a certain couple.

Where’s the new picture of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore)?! While Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) each boast images disparate from those on the first season’s key art, our This Is Us OTP gets stuck with a photo ripped right out of one of the Season 1’s cutest moments. What gives?

It can be chalked up to a matter of not having any current promotional shots of the pair or, more likely, spoiler management. As wild a thought as it is, there are people out there who still haven’t tuned in and don’t know the twist. The poster can’t give anything away. Granted, each of the character images hail from the blockbuster first season, though none of them are as recognizably dated as Jack and Rebecca’s. It’s the smallest gripe, but we would have loved an update.

Still, the release of the official poster has us more excited for what’s to come in Season 2 than ever. And we have a feeling those laughs, loving looks, and tearful embraces hardly scratch the surface of what we should be preparing for in the season it represents. At any rate, it’s a beautiful change of pace to see Jack and Rebecca laughing rather than holding each other in grief. Our hearts have been given a break — we’ll take it.
