Ahead of the second season premiere of NBC’s Emmy nominated darling This Is Us, the cast has been making the rounds here, there, and everywhere ramping up interest. Although interest is already well on the table, we’re still desperately in need of teases and tidbits about Season 2 and the actors themselves, and Sterling K. Brown’s interview with Jess Cagle is the gift that keeps on giving.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly’s Jess Cagle, Sterling K. Brown has opened up about the importance of transracial adoption on This Is Us and talked about his open line of communication with his son about popularly “taboo” topics. In the latest clip to be released from the the full interview, Cagle quizzes Brown in a lightning round of random questions. How do strangers, friends, and he himself describe him? Which movie has he seen the most times? How does he start his day? And which movie does he think is overrated? Look away now, Gone with the Wind fans.
Listen, we all have strong opinions on movies, TV shows, and music. Don’t believe me? Log onto Twitter and scroll around during an episode of Game of Thrones, the VMAs, or the minute Taylor Swift or Katy Perry move a muscle. People unleash torrents of dissent and fandom in a flurry of 140 character-stacked threads. It’s a mine field.
Sterling K. Brown isn’t here to start drama with the Gone with the Wind fans, but he’s no different from casual pop culture followers who harbor passionate stances. While he’s seen the film Coming to America more times than any other movie, Brown tells Jess Cagle that he thinks the Clark Gable-Vivian Leigh historical romance is an over-hyped classic:
"“My mom used to talk about it all the time, like it was this amazing thing, and I felt like, when I watched it, it’s one of those things like… watching Casablanca, I love the filmmaking of it, but it’s the acting style is more heightened, right? And so, when you hear something talk about it’s like the greatest of all time, and you see it, and like, ‘Oh… okay.'”"
You have to admit, Sterling K. Brown provided some sound reasoning behind his opinions. Still, I’m just relaying his message. Don’t kill the messenger. But he does have a point. Sometimes older movies retain their high regard because they are viewed as classic even though, stylistically, they are beyond outdated. Could you imagine if films these days employed the same techniques as those in the past? And La La Land caught heat for doing much less.
