Some thoughts on why Kate Pearson claims she caused Jack Pearson’s death
As we await even more details of Jack Pearson‘s death, all of us fans are wondering how Kate Pearson was involved. From the first time I heard her mention that it was her fault, I’ve been trying to figure it out. I’m sure most of you have, too.

By now, almost every fan is aware of the tragic house fire that was caused by a faulty Crock Pot. There’s got to be more to the story of Jack Pearson’s death though. There always is, especially when it comes to This is Us. I have a feeling that at least some of it will unfold in the episode following the Super Bowl. One detail I hope to find out about is Kate Pearson’s involvement with his death.
There are a few ideas I’ve been tossing around since Kate said she was to blame. One complication is Kate’s personality. I feel like she would easily take responsibility for something that she was indirectly at fault for. For example, maybe they used the Crock Pot to make one of her favorite foods after she requested it. Maybe she’s thinking that her trip to the mall distracted her parents from buying smoke detector batteries.
For now, I’m just going to focus on how Kate could have directly caused Jack’s death.
I think that the dog might have something to do with it. The dog definitely seems to be Kate’s more than anyone else’s. I have heard plenty of fans assuming that Jack went back into the house to get the dog. Kate is seen holding the dog after the fire though. This makes me think that the dog was already out of the house and nobody noticed until it was too late.
After that father-daughter moment between Jack and Kate after he filmed her singing, I wouldn’t be surprised if he went back inside to grab the tape. He knew she wanted to make it into a music program at college. Knowing their relationship, I think that Jack would try to take down anything in Kate’s way. Saving her audition tape seems pretty essential, especially if he didn’t consider the chance that he would die in the fire.

There’s a chance that Kate reminded Jack to go into the house to get anything else. It could have been something that was meaningful to her and the rest of their family. Maybe it was something small that wasn’t as important as we think. Jack also could have gone inside to save Kate herself. I’m assuming that this wasn’t the case, since everyone else got out okay.
Regardless of what goes down, we all know that This is Us is always full of plot twists. Who knows what will actually happen?
