Mandy Moore’s right: She needs to make music again (and not just on This Is Us)

This Is Us fans know Mandy Moore as Rebecca Pearson, but longtime fans know her as an angelic singer-songwriter. It’s time for some new music.

In a recent Wired video, Mandy Moore fielded a question that hurt my heart. Sitting alongside TV husband Milo Ventimiglia and TV son Justin Hartley, Moore answered the internet’s most searched questions about each This Is Us star. The internet wondered if Ventimiglia would be sticking around as Jack and if Hartley was related to Tom Cruise. But one of Moore’s questions was absolutely blasphemous.

“Does Mandy Moore sing?” the internet wanted to know. Does Mandy Moore sing? Does Mandy Moore sing?! As a fan since the “Candy” days, I am not only insulted, but I am enraged. How could there be people in the world who don’t know the breadth of Mandy Moore’s talents? How could you not know about her music career, especially after watching This Is Us? Thankfully, Ventimiglia and Hartley paid her incredible voice compliments, but it reminded me that we need new music.

While wrapping up the video, Mandy Moore herself even admits that she should get back in the studio to silence those pesky googlers questioning whether she sings. Mandy, if by chance you’re reading this, please please please! If not for the world (and to save pop music), do it for me. We’re one year shy of the 10th anniversary of Amanda Leigh, and I have been marking each passing year sans new bops with a heavy sigh.

Trust me, no one is more elated about Moore’s career renaissance thanks to the brilliance of This Is Us than I am. At least once a week, I’ll randomly text a friend, “I’m so happy for Mandy Moore,” and punctuate it with no less than six sobbing emojis. She’s doing the damn thing and living her best life and enjoying the sweet, sweet perks of starring in TV’s No. 1 drama. There’s simply no one more deserving than our unproblematic goddess.

But I can’t let another moment pass without publicly advocating for the next phase in Moore’s singing career. Watching her belt out oldies as Rebecca Pearson is a rewarding experience, and Wild Hope’s surprise arrival on Spotify was a win, though holding a shiny new LP wouldn’t be so bad either. It’s unfathomable that Moore isn’t chopping through a forest of major label offers like Lorde in the “Perfect Places” video.

If Mandy Moore wanted to make music outside of her role on This Is Us, I can’t imagine that it would be difficult for her to land a new lucrative deal with the best in the business. Even a boutique indie label that isn’t dependent on Swiftian sales figures should want to scoop her up. She’s a hot commodity, like a Happy Endings star during pilot season, and the industry would be crazy not to hand over those pennies in their pockets.

However, Moore’s still in the midst of a transition. With a new home and engagement on top of her commitments for This Is Us, it’s tough to sneak in writing sessions and studio time. Considering her transformation into 60-something Rebecca takes hours, we can forgive Moore for her absence from the music scene. But when she’s ready to heed her own advice and dazzle us with new music, I’ll be the first to spread the good word.

Are you waiting for new music or are you among the people weirdly unsure of her singing talents? Let us know in the comments, and be sure to keep the conversation going over on Twitter at @thisisuscrying!

This Is Us returns for Season 3 in September on NBC.
