What’s going on with Toby in Season 3 of This Is Us? Chrissy Metz is spilling exclusive details about what’s causing his depression.

Before we dive right into spoiler bits you clicked on this article for, I must first issue an apology to This Is Us fans. Earlier this week, I speculated that the series hinted that Toby might be dying in Season 3, and that’s seemingly not the case. Look, you can never trust this show. Seeing Toby lying in bed in conjunction with the endless death rumors floating around, it’s only natural to theorize. But Chrissy Metz swooped in to debunk our theory — thankfully.

In the same article, I also mentioned that Toby could very well be suffering from a debilitating depression once again. The second season finale dropped seeds of his depression thanks to his filter-less mother, and according to Chrissy Metz, mental health might very well be at the forefront of Kate and Toby’s struggles in Season 3. What’s causing Toby’s depression to resurface? Metz shares some insight on what to expect, and it’s heartbreaking.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Chrissy Metz opened up about the troubles soon to be facing the newlyweds when This Is Us returns in September. She candidly spoke about Kate and Toby’s continued difficulties with conception, a subject that’ll surely still be wrought for both of them following Kate’s miscarriage in Season 2. But will the stress of attempting to get pregnant push Toby further into depression? Here’s what Metz told EW:

"“Having a baby is something that is life-changing, and two people just want to hope that they can have a baby. Whose fault is that? Maybe there’s something going on physically with Toby too? Who knows? Those things might not have been talked about or addressed because we keep our secrets and we’re ashamed of them.”"

Obviously, it’s all very baseline and basic stuff. We know that conceiving a child won’t be easy for Kate and Toby and that it will cast a shadow over both of them. However, let’s also note this nugget of suggestion: Something could be affecting Toby physically. What could that mean? Whatever might be going on, Kate will be right by his side through it all.

"“He’s helped Kate get through so much of her stuff that she’s really ready to show up for him, and while it might be difficult, it’s going to be necessary because they’re going to contend with some hardships. Yet again. Life on life’s terms.”"

Season 3 will feature a role reversal in Kate and Toby’s relationship. Now that Kate has slayed the lingering demons from her past with Toby’s help, she will have to step up to help Toby defeat his. To echo Metz’s sentiments, there’s nothing Kate and Toby can’t handle together, and we know that they will get through it. If Chrissy’s not worried, neither are we.
