Mandy Moore tells NewBeauty her favorite part about playing Rebecca Pearson

Rebecca Pearson might be one of the most demanding roles to play on This Is Us, but Mandy Moore shares her favorite part of the challenge.

When This Is Us premiered in September 2016, it didn’t take fans long to fall completely in love with the cast and the characters they portray. Over time, we have only gotten to know them more, which has increased our love for them to the highest power. Mandy Moore plays one of the show’s more complicated characters, Rebecca Pearson, but she finds it rewarding.

Speaking with NewBeauty about all things from her time-consuming transformation to become 66 years old for This Is Us to her skincare secrets (be right back, taking fervent notes), Mandy Moore let us all in on her daily beauty routine and how she scored the perfect brows. But she also told us what we really wanted to know: Her favorite part about playing Rebecca.

If you’re a religious viewer of This Is Us, then you most likely have strong feelings about Rebecca, as well as most of the characters on the show. Since the series is committed to representing real life, sometimes the characters make questionable decisions with solid intentions, and we have to recalibrate our love for the character… much like in real life.

But Moore says her favorite thing about Rebecca is that she’s a “fallible human being” who messes up but tries again, which is a testament to the relatable nature of the show. As she told NewBeauty:

"“I have never, ever been a part of something that people connect to like this, and it resonates so deeply. People want to come up to you and talk to you about the most vulnerable things in their lives and the experiences they’ve had. They want to get real with you and talk about the nitty gritty of life and that’s pretty unbelievable. It’s very humbling.”"

The beauty mag went on to discuss Moore’s double duty as a 66-year-old woman, which the actress admits doesn’t freak her out. Rather than seeing an aged version of herself, or finding her mother or grandmother in the makeup, she simply sees Rebecca. But that doesn’t mean the process of becoming Rebecca isn’t daunting.

From beginning to end, the unbelievable talent of the This Is Us hair and makeup department takes three and a half hours, including the wig and small details like dark spots. And at the end of a filming day, it takes an hour to shed the years of Rebecca Pearson and return to Mandy Moore. However, it’s all worth it when millions of fans connect to the story and the character.
