This Is Us producers dish about what fans can expect in Season 3 when it comes to the Pearsons.

This Is Us producers Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker attended the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Wednesday, August 8 to discuss America’s favorite flawed family.

Season 3 will pick up a few months after Toby (Chris Sullivan) and Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) wedding as the Pearson siblings celebrate turning 38, but just like in previous seasons, the beloved series will explore other decades too. The premiere will also boogie back to the ’70s to show viewers Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) first date.

This Is Us Season 2 ends with several flash forwards, laying the groundwork for what is to come. One involves Toby who appears poised to sink into a deeply depressed state. Maybe marrying Kate wasn’t such a good idea after all? We know Toby’s struggled with mental health issues in the past, even contemplating suicide following his split from his first wife.

More compelling for viewers is the 15-year time jump involving Randall (Sterling K. Brown) who tells an adult Tess (Iantha Richardson), “It’s time to go see her.” Fans don’t know who “her” is, but the obvious suspect is Deja (Lyric Ross) who we last saw vandalizing Randall’s car in a fit of rage.

Fans worried Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) might be the next Pearson casualty, but Watkins set the record straight in an Entertainment Weekly interview, “She’s going to survive.”

But with the addition of three new characters (also be on the lookout for some celebrity cameos), this mystery woman could be someone we haven’t seen yet.

One new addition is Jack’s brother, Nicky, who has been cast, but producers remain tight-lipped about who’s playing him.

Nicky will appear as part of the storyline which will explore Jack’s time in Vietnam.

This Is Us brought on writer Tim O’Brien whose book, The Things They Carried, chronicles his time in Vietnam. O’Brien served as a consultant and a writer for an episode with the show’s creator and executive producer Dan Fogelman.

Depression and war don’t sound particularly uplifting, but This Is Us does a sublime job of combining laughter and tears. “This is a hopeful season about true beginnings,” Berger said.
