This Is Us is back tonight after a long hiatus and here is the new and continued drama we can expect from the Pearson Clan.

When last we saw the Pearsons, Kevin was investigating his father’s time in Vietnam and discovered his dead Uncle Nicky wasn’t so dead. Randall was pursuing a hopeless political campaign, Tess came out to her parents, Kate enrolled in school, and we finally saw the beginnings of Rebecca and Jack’s relationship. Just when you think a storyline is closing another one pops up from just underneath it. Life goes on.

Whatever happens, Randall’s campaign storyline will come to an end soon, which is a relief. As noted elsewhere, the logistics of his campaign made very little sense and is obviously a strain on his already complicated family life. With Beth unemployed and overwhelmed and Tess struggling with her sexuality, a little stability would not go amiss.

Kevin went all the way to Vietnam to find answers about Jack’s time there and discovers that his Uncle Nicky may not have died in the war after all. Viewers know that Nicky is alive somewhere and living in solitude, but not yet the circumstances that lead him there and whether Jack really knew he was alive or not. Justin Hartley revealed that Kevin will meet Uncle Nicky “really, really, really soon.” As for Kevin’s budding romance with Beth’s cousin Zoe, the episode 10 trailer teases some trouble ahead.

Toby convinced Kate to finish school to keep her active and occupied during her pregnancy. There appears to be some kind of crisis ahead for them. Whether it is baby or school related or otherwise, the trailer shows Kate in tears with Toby comforting her.

And then there’s still this whole flash-forward storyline with the Pearsons coming together to see their mother for some seemingly solemn reason. The most likely reason would be a deathbed situation, but history has shown that this show can be pleasantly unpredictable. Tess claims she “isn’t ready” and a morose Toby claims he doesn’t think she’d want him to be there. Randall is everyone’s rock, as usual.

This Is Us resumes tonight, January 15 at 9pm ET on NBC.
