This Is Us cast members won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at tonight’s 25th Annual SAG Awards.

The competition was fierce at tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, with This Is Us nominated for Best Ensemble and Sterling K. Brown set to make history and possibly take home an unprecedented three trophies. The family drama went up against critical giants like The Americans, Better Call Saul, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Ozark. Indeed, with an upset early on when Brown lost out to Ozark’s Jason Bateman for Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series, the chances of This Is Us repeating last year’s win was looking a little shaky. But in the end the Pearsons prevailed and gave us the best reaction shots of the night.

The Pearsons celebrated like the family they are and milled around onstage like they were getting ready to take an awkward family photo. Watching the 6’2”Justin Hartley stand in front of little Faithe Herman and Eris Baker (Annie and Tess Pearson) was the height of dorky Uncle-dom. And to watch Sterling K. Brown hold back tears and proudly hug teenage Randall actor Niles Fitch was a moment of beauty. The two never share a scene, but its clear that they collaborate closely on the character of Randall Pearson. It takes a village to make a character that good.

While Brown may have lost out on making SAG history, it was a pretty sure bet that he would at least be taking two trophies home again this year, this time as part of the Black Panther ensemble for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. While Black Panther went up against films like A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Crazy Rich Asians, I don’t think anything could have beat out Black Panther. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking to hear how grateful the cast is to have a vehicle like Black Panther, to give a place for young, gifted, and black actors to belong, and to have it resonate and connect so deeply with not just the black community, but with everyone.
