As much as we love the drama on screen, fans love the juicy behind-the-scenes details about how our favorite show was made and what could have been. Michael Angarano (Uncle Nicky) reveals that he and Milo Ventimiglia (Jack Pearson) did several different takes of their reunion scene for This Is Us and that some of them were more intense and emotional than others. While the power of the finished scene lies in its awkwardness and subdued sorrow, there were other takes where the brothers actually “yelled at each other.” It would be facsinating to see as a bonus feature on a BluRay someday.

However, I think they made the right choice in the end. The moment is almost underwhelming because nothing gets said and nothing gets resolved. They both go on just the same as they were before without any change or growth or closure. The emotion in the scene comes in large part from the brothers’ struggle to communicate and reconnect with each other. They never could overcome what was between them, but the heartbreak and guilt is palpable in their scene together. “So much of the emotion is what is not said,” Angarano said. “What [Nicky’s] feeling is a lot of regret and shame and guilt, and that is something he carries with him his whole life.”

While the part of Uncle Nicky is being taken over by Griffin Dunne for the modern day storyline, Angarano doesn’t rule out his return in other past storylines, before or after Vietnam. After all, Jack and Nicky grew up together and at least had some experiences before Nicky got drafted. And who’s to say that Jack didn’t see Nicky post-Vietnam and pre-1992? In any case, there’s plenty in Nicky’s past that can be explored and Angarano is game to return for more storylines.
