Susan Kelechi Watson teases flash forward and R&B future

This Is Us star Susan Kelechi Watson talks about that flash forward and Beth and Randall’s relationship in the future.

With the mystery of Uncle Nicky’s story more or less revealed – although I’m sure there’s more yet to come – fans are turning toward the hovering mystery of that somber and distressing flash forward moment. It’s still a mystery who the “she” is that the family are going to see, but it’s quite obvious that the situation is tense and emotional. A lot has changed in those years and it is unclear whether Kate and Toby are still together, whether Kate is the “her” they are going to see, what the crisis is that’s hanging over the family, and more importantly, whether Randall and Beth are still together. We merely get glimpses of people’s lives, how they’ve changed, and hints about their current relationships. It’s all very unsettling and Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Beth Pearson on This Is Us, does nothing to help matters.

While Chrissy Metz said that whatever the family is going toward in the flash fowards is “not good,” Watson categorizes it as “a completion in a way. For fans definitely. That comes to my mind. But also for us as individual characters, I think there’s going to be something very complete that happens in that moment.” Perhaps from Metz’s perspective the outcome is bad because it involves her character? The way Watson describes that moment they’re going toward definitely sounds intriguing and emotional.

As for whether Beth and Randall are together in the future, Watson refuses to give anything away. “All I can say is marriage is hard,” comments Watson. “I didn’t realize how much their bond really means to people, in terms of seeing them together and keeping that intact,” marveled Watson. “But people have very much expressed that they would not be happy [if they broke up].” As for where Beth ends up the future – apparently running a dance studio – it all makes perfect sense to Watson because Beth can do whatever she wants.
