This Is Us’ Mandy Moore teases flash forward event, Rebecca’s fate, and future seasons.

It’s been one year since Jack’s death was revealed on This Is Us and fans are already consumed with another potentially heartbreaking mystery. While we now know that the “her” Randall, Tess, Beth, and Toby are visiting in the flash forward is in fact Rebecca, we still don’t know what is happening or why. Susan Kelechi Watson has said that “there’s going to be something very complete that happens in that moment” and Chrissy Metz has said its “not good,” but what does Rebecca herself say about it?

“In typical This Is Us fashion, it is true to life,” says Moore. “But it costs a lot. It’s going to be a lot for people to digest emotionally, but it’s real.” The most obvious fan speculation is that Rebecca is dying and that the Big Three are coming together to see her one last time. With Watson teasing “something very complete,” it could very well be that complete circle of the Three losing their second parent. My specific idea about that is that Rebecca has Alzheimer’s and that Pin the Tail on the Donkey is a memory trigger device. Another thought that I had is that maybe Rebecca is fine, but maybe it’s Miguel that is dying. Some of us may not be emotionally attached to Miguel yet, but that doesn’t mean Rebecca doesn’t love him. It would be pretty emotionally distressing to see Rebecca lose another husband, and perhaps by that time Miguel has become closer to the rest of the family.

Moore even brings up Miguel, saying that she hopes to explore their relationship more in future episodes:

"“I love Jon Huertas. He is the unsung hero of our cast. He is so funny. He’s so charming and winning. And I feel like Miguel has gotten a raw deal because people are like, ‘But he’s not Jack.’ And it’s like, ‘Of course he’s not, but that doesn’t lessen their — they have a connection.’ They’re both entitled to have found one another and have companionship and have a relationship. Their life shouldn’t be over just because he got divorced and her husband passed away. It’s, again, very true to life. They should celebrate finding each other and being able to support one another after such a loss.”"

The delay on an announcement for season four might make some fans a little nervous, but Moore says her understanding is that execs are just trying to decide how many more seasons in all before annoucing them all together. “We’ve been told pretty much what happens next season and we know how the show ends, so it’s just whether or not it’s five or six seasons is what they’re deciding on right now.”
