18 episodes of This Is Us aired in 2019. Which episode garnered the most live viewers? Which episode drew the least?

As the calendar year winds down, it’s always fun to take a look back at what’s occurred in that time. For This Is Us Crying, we’d like to take a look at the numbers from our favorite show. 2019 blessed us with 18 new episodes of This Is Us, with nine from the latter half of Season 3 and nine more from the first half of Season 4.

Now, it should be noted that viewership data for nearly all shows have dwindled down over the years because of streaming services, social media and the continued evolution of the digital age. Despite that, the TV and social media numbers are still telling of what draws viewers in.

Season 4 data (so far)

We’ll start by just focusing on the nine episodes from Season 4 so far. As one could expect, the Season 4 premiere, “Strangers,” garnered the highest live number with 7.88 million viewers on Sept. 24. “Strangers” introduced us to new characters such as Malik, Cassidy, a grown Jack Damon and his wife, Lucy. That episode also saw Jack Pearson meet Rebecca’s parents for the first time.

Sept. 24 was a big season premiere night for many shows, yetThis Is Us came in with the fourth highest viewership behind NCIS, The Voice and FBI. Factoring in the DVR numbers, the Season 4 premiere drew a total of 13.03 million viewers. While this number was down from the Season 3 finale (13.55 million overall), there was still plenty of hype with the new faces being incorporated.

The least-viewed episode from Season 4 appears to be Episode 7, “The Dinner and the Date.” Drawing 6.72 viewers on Nov. 5, this hour focused on Randall and Beth hosting Malik’s family for a conversational dinner, while Jack and Rebecca welcomed young Randall’s teacher into their home for dinner as well. It should be noted that Episode 4, “Flip a Coin,” also drew 6.72 live viewers, but it drew an overall 11.48 million over Episode 7’s 11.42.

As of this writing, “The Dinner and the Date” is the lowest-viewed live episode in the history of This Is Us so far. That information is a shame really because I’m a huge fan of intense dinner-themed TV episodes and I particularly enjoyed this one.

Looking back at Season 3

We’ll have to back-pedal to Season 3 to find the highest viewership number of 2019. Ironically it was the second episode of the year from Jan. 22, “Songbird Road (Part 1),” which drew 8.22 million live viewers and 13.72 million overall. That episode revealed more backstory on what went down between Jack and Nicky in Vietnam. It was also a pivotal one for the present-day Big Three as they drove to Bradford to meet their Uncle Nicky for the first time.

On the flip side, “Songbird Road (Part 2)” drew the lowest live number from Season 3 with 7.40 million after a three-week hiatus. It’s safe to say that the small break in between episodes wasn’t ideal, but things happen in the world of television.

Most-viewed video clip

As mentioned earlier, this digital age has changed the way viewers consume their entertainment. With that said, I did some digging on the official This Is Us YouTube channel to find out which episode highlight was the most-viewed clip this year. I was somewhat surprised to find out it was the clip of Toby revealing his shocking body transformation when he comes clean to Kate about going to the gym. The clip from Episode 3, “Unhinged,” has over 99K viewers. Check it out for yourself:
