This Is Us Season 4: What’s next for Kate and Toby?

The fall finale for This Is Us Season 4 left a lot of questions on the table regarding the future of Kate and Toby’s marriage. What’s next for them when This Is Us returns on Jan. 14?

This Is Us Season 4 has explored a new chapter in Kate and Toby’s marriage. After Jack was born with blindness, the couple has struggled to stay on the same page. Toby took up Crossfit to get in the best shape of his life, but it may be causing more problems than we first realized.

As you may recall, the midseason finale featured a scene where Kate grabbed Toby’s phone to take a photo, yet she couldn’t help but notice group chat messages that included a suspicious one from “LadyKryptonite5.” This begs the question – has Toby been confiding too much of his marriage in someone else rather than talking with Kate? On the same token, Kate is slightly guilty of the same thing when it comes to hanging out with their neighbor, Gregory, but at least we know exactly what’s gone on between them.

Going into the the second half of Season 4, Kate and Toby both realize there’s major problems they need to address before things spiral out of control. As revealed in the newest teaser for Episode 10, Kate will confront Toby about how she feels him pulling away. When she asks if she’s crazy for thinking that, Toby responds with, “No. No, you’re not crazy.” Yikes.

To dig a little further into what we can expect from them on Jan. 14, the official synopsis for the new episode interestingly states, “Kate meets Toby’s Crossfit friends.” One would think that Toby suggests Kate meet his friends so that she can trust there’s nothing going on between him and Miss LadyKryptonite. But what if Kate does some sneaking around to find his friends on her own? Either way, let’s hope there’s nothing suspicious going on and that it’s all one big misunderstanding.

Circling back to the identity of the mystery texter, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman told People in the fall that her identity “may be surprising” when it comes time for the revelation. As I speculated before, this woman could be someone we’ve met before, perhaps someone like Kate’s friend, Madison?
