Justin Hartley was recently a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show to open up about his directorial debut and how he saved Clarkson at the Billboard Music Awards.
The third member of This Is Us‘ Big Three made his Kelly Clarkson Show debut this week just in time to discuss what it was like directing an episode for the first time. In case you didn’t know, Justin Hartley served as the director for Season 4, Episode 13, “A Hell of a Week: Part Three,” where Kate Pearson was the focus.
When asked about the experience, Hartley couldn’t stop gushing about the cast:
They’re so talented, so dedicated, so prepared. Professional, sweet, nice, kind human beings. They’re like angels.

Clarkson and Hartley continued on about how everything works well when the team is amazing. Hartley concluded by sharing how awesome it was to see his name in the director’s credit.
But before they touched on This Is Us, Clarkson reminded Justin Hartley that they last met when she hosted the Billboard Music Awards in May 2019. Clarkson was running around backstage during all of her quick changes when a guy had stepped on Clarkson’s dress train as she went by.
Hartley managed to get the guy to raise his right foot to prevent a major wardrobe malfunction before she went out on stage again. Clarkson thanked Justin from the bottom of her heart for saving her without her even knowing it.
The conversation shifted to Hartley’s fifteen-year-old daughter, Bella, who was sitting in the front row. The trio discussed how Bella has taken Justin’s advice when it comes to dealing with bullies at school, and that’s to “kill them with kindness.”
You can watch the eight-minute clip of Hartley’s appearance below, which includes more conversations about his family and what his first acting experience was:
