This Is Us speculation: Madison might not be Kevin’s fiancée

This Is Us showrunner Dan Fogelman recently hinted that Madison might not be Kevin’s fiancee. What could this mean for their future?

In a conversation with a group of journalists, Dan Fogelman revealed that This Is Us would continue to explore Kevin’s love life in Season 5. This seems to suggest that although fans were originally led to believe that Madison and Kevin would end up together, that may not necessarily be the case.

Mystery Revealed

When it was revealed in Season 4, Episode 9 that within a year, Kevin would be engaged and bound for fatherhood, fans were left to speculate who the mystery fiancée was. Throughout Season 4, This Is Us also introduced characters such as Cassidy, a Marine veteran struggling with PTSD, and brought back Kevin’s high school sweetheart and ex-wife Sophie.

While at the time, it seemed as though either woman was likely to be the mother of his children, This Is Us threw a curveball, when in the Season 4 finale, it was revealed that Madison is pregnant, and Kevin’s the father.

Despite this, when asked to confirm that Madison was Kevin’s fiancée, Fogelman had this to say:

"“I believe there’s an immediate answer coming to all of that, but I think that there’s basically a lot more…many more chapters in Kevin’s romantic story. We are far advanced already. I’ve already written the season premiere of next year and broken, I think, five episodes of the season, and we have mapped out plans for the entire next and sixth season honestly, so Kevin has a journey ahead of him, and I don’t want to get too far ahead of it just yet.”"

Flash-forwards and Possibilities

This news opens up more room for speculation. The Season 4, Episode 9 flash-forward specifically stated that Kevin had a pregnant fiancée. If it’s not Madison, this could mean that Cassidy, who Kevin slept with in Season 4, Episode 6, could also be pregnant.

It would make sense, given Cassidy’s less than enthusiastic expression at the mention of Kevin’s name in the Season 4 finale. If that’s the case, things are about to get messy.

However, it’s worth mentioning that although Madison was revealed to be the mother of Kevin’s children, she did not appear in the latest flash-forward that featured them and Kevin at Rebecca’s deathbed. Yet, in the same scene, Kevin is wearing a wedding ring. Fogelman’s comment could simply be implying that despite having children together, Kevin and Madison aren’t together in the future. If that’s the case, that leaves the door open for Kevin to reunite with Cassidy or Sophie.

I’ve said in the past that Kevin and Cassidy wouldn’t work well together in the longterm because they’ve both got some healing to do. However, with time between them, it’s possible that they could maintain an adult relationship, and honestly, the same could be said for Kevin and Sophie.

Old Flame, Last Chance

Kevin and Sophie were high school sweethearts and decided to get married when they were, in my opinion, way too young. Although the show seemed to close the door on Kevin and Sophie’s relationship in Season 4, Episode 12, there may still be hope. In that same episode, newlyweds Kevin and Sophie return home to visit Sophie’s mother. Although Kevin asks to give Sophie her grandmother’s wedding ring, her mother tells him that he hasn’t earned it yet.

At the end of the episode, 39-year-old Kevin seems resigned to the fact that he never earned that ring. However, Kevin’s done a lot of growing up since then. He’s starting to take responsibility for his actions and leaving behind unhealthy coping mechanisms. The window of opportunity may still very well be open despite Sophie’s engagement, however, if it is, this may very well be his last chance.
