You’re not running out of episodes of Grey’s Anatomy any time soon. The 21st season just began on Thursday, Sept. 26.
Of course, you’ve rewatched the seasons time and time again. You could watch it for the 100th time, but what if there are other medical dramas on Netflix to check out? What about romance dramas on the streamer? After all, Grey’s Anatomy covers many genres despite it being a medical drama.
So, where do you start? How about these seven shows to get you started?
New Amsterdam
Just recently, the NBC series New Amsterdam has been added to Netflix. This is a must-watch if you love seeing a Chief of Medicine who just wants to do the best for his patients but doesn’t always get it right. Ryan Eggod plays Dr. Max Goodwin, who starts working at the public hospital New Amsterdam in New York.
While it’s a public hospital, there are still issues with the costs of medication. Max spends his time trying to find ways to get care to the people who need it. At the same time, we get to know the many other doctors in the hospital, including the brilliant ER doc Lauren Bloom and the hospital’s caring psychologist Iggy Frome.
The Resident
Yes, we have to turn to another medical drama. This FOX drama is one of the most underrated medical dramas, but it’s now on Netflix and that’s a chance for it to gain a new fanbase. The series follows a group of doctors at a hospital that is all about money.
The doctors and nurses find ways to treat patients to help them. Throughout the first season, they have to deal with one doctor carrying out cancer drug fraud that threatens innocent people. Can the CEO, Dr. Bell, choose the right side?
Call the Midwife
We’re heading to the 1950s for this series. Call the Midwife is a chance to look at healthcare in the 1950s in London. Most specifically, it’s a look at female healthcare, as the series focuses on a group of midwives who aid in pregnancy, female sexual health, and delivering babies.
There are some difficult topics touched on throughout this series. Just think about the laws around women’s health at the time, and I’m sure you can guess what they are. There is some focus on the personal storylines, but this gets to the heart of the patient storylines, which is what drew us to Grey’s Anatomy in the first place, right?
Suits
We’re stepping away from the medical dramas. After all, Grey’s Anatomy is not all about the medicine. There is a lot of personal drama between the doctors, which means a show like Suits is a must. This is a legal drama that is packed with personal storylines.
We start by meeting Mike Ross, who goes into an interview to be a lawyer at a prestigious law firm, but he hasn’t passed the bar. Harvey Spector is so impressed with him, that he pretends Mike is a lawyer anyway. Of course, they need to get caught, especially as Mike starts to fall for the gorgeous paralegal at the first, Rachel.
Wentworth
Again, we’re stepping away from the medical dramas. Wentworth is an Australian prison drama that focuses on a lot of personal relationships between the women in the prison and the guards. Yes, there are some steamy moments, but there are also some harsh and trauma-focused topics that come up throughout the series.
This is one for those who like the drama side of Grey's. There are some medical emergencies here and there, but the focus of Wentworth is on the women surviving in prison.
Supernatural
Okay, the series itself doesn’t initially sound like something for Grey’s fans. It’s about two brothers who hunt monsters and demons. However, stick with it, because there is a great moment with a Grey’s Anatomy parody. If you really only want to watch that episode, you’ll need to jump to season 5, episode 8. There are some parts that are connected to the bigger storyline, but the whole episode brings parodies of your favorite shows and game shows.
This is also packed with guest stars that you’ll recognize from Grey’s Anatomy. One of those is Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Sam and Dean Winchester’s dad, John Winchester.
Virgin River
Finally, we turn to something for the romance. It’s all about the Netflix Original Series Virgin River. After all, it even has the crossover of Martin Henderson in the series! We love seeing Grey’s characters in other shows!
Virgin River even follows a nurse practitioner who moves to a northern California town away from LA to get a fresh start. While she finds a new start, she also finds a potential future and the love of her life. Of course, secrets of the past always come out, but what is Mel hiding?
