What we know so far about a potential Heartstopper season 4

Heartstopper season 3 was released on Netflix on Oct. 3, and it didn't take long at all for people to speed through all eight episodes of the romantic teen series. Honestly, the episodes aren't that long, so this isn't surprising. But for the people who have already watched the third season in its entirety, you're probably wondering about a fourth installment.

We haven't had to worry about a renewal for this show for the past two seasons because Netflix gave Heartstopper a two-season renewal upfront after the release of its first season. But that two-season renewal just ended with the show's third season. As of Oct. 4, the streaming giant hasn't said a word about whether the show will come back for a fourth season.

Are we necessarily surprised by this? No, because the third season just dropped, and Netflix doesn't usually renew a show as soon as its new season releases. The streaming giant typically waits to see where the viewership numbers fall before coming to a decision. Heartstopper season 3 seems to be doing well for itself so far, with it currently ranking at the No. 4 spot on Netflix's top 10 TV shows list. This means it's one of the most popular shows on Netflix at the moment. In other words, a good amount of people are tuned in.

If the show keeps up with this momentum, we'll likely hear of a Heartstopper season 4 renewal soon. It took only a month from the first season's release for Netflix to renew the show for a second and third season. What's been said about a potential Heartstopper season 4

What we do know about this show's future is that series creator Alice Oseman is down to do one more season. Yes, you read that right. If Netflix were to renew Heartstopper for a fourth season, it would be the final installment. Oseman said this herself via her Patreon page. She also shared that a potential fourth season would cover volume 6 of her Heartstopper book series as well as the Nick and Charlie novella. Heartstopper Volume 6 is the final volume in the book series, and Oseman is still currently writing it.

"If we get a fourth season of the show, it will use volume 6 of Heartstopper and the Nick and Charlie novella as the source material. I am very much hoping that there will be a fourth season, so the show gets to have a proper ending! I'm praying to the gods! Begging on my knees! Having nightmares about it regularly, etc!"

On her Patreon page, Oseman also gives a little information on what the sixth volume will be about. Obviously, whatever is included in the sixth book will most likely be included in a potential Heartstopper season 4. Oseman says that the sixth book will dive deeper into Nick and Charlie's relationship dynamic and also give some of the smaller subplots that were already introduced in the story a "satisfying conclusion."

"At the end of the day... I love that Heartstopper is mostly a slice of life story - just the everyday progression of Nick and Charlie's relationship and the ups and downs of their school days together. I want the whole of Vol 6 to feel like an epilogue to that, in some ways. And of course it will be fun and silly sometimes, and there will be some plot, but I don't want to introduce new big story elements just for the sake of this book having a unique selling point. In my heart, I know I want it to be low-stakes and character-driven, and I am going to try and make it so. And if some people think that's boring, then, hey, so be it. I think I'm really going to like it though!"
