Eliza and William certainly had a complex relationship, and that relationship has come to an abrupt end. Should Eliza go be with William after the events of the Miss Scarlet season 5 premiere?

There is no doubt that one of the reasons we tuned into Miss Scarlet and The Duke was to see Eliza and William’s bond grow. They went from virtual strangers to lovers, and we loved every second of that development.

Now William is gone, and Eliza has a new detective inspector to deal with. Would it have been better for Eliza to go to New York to be with William? Here’s why she should (and ultimately shouldn’t) choose William.

Why she should: There is nobody else perfect for her like William

While the two certainly had their ups and downs, there’s no doubt that they were just right for each other. The two were adult orphans, and William was the only person left who knew Eliza’s father well. They would respect each other’s professions and skills, and they don’t enable or accept bad behavior.

In the end, they made each other better people. We need partners who do that, and we need to see how healthy relationships like this are.

Why she shouldn’t: London is her home

We always say that women shouldn’t feel the need to follow a man to another country. Of course, this is the Victorian period, so it is very different for a woman. However, London is Eliza’s home. This is where she is comfortable. It’s a place she knows and she can do her business.

It’s not so easy for some people to just up and leave. While there is a somewhat adventurous spirit to Eliza, she is also pretty happy with her life the way it is (except for William’s departure). She has something of her father’s with her every step of the way in London.

Why she should: Eliza deserves happiness

After everything that has happened over the years, Eliza deserves to be happy. And she is happy with William. She wants to be with him, and the two love each other. Everyone deserves happiness, as long as it’s not at the expense of purposely hurting others.

Of course, this brings me to a reason she shouldn’t go with William. Would she truly be happy with him?

Why she shouldn’t: She loves her career

Going with William would have meant giving up her career. As much as she didn’t want this at first, she has made a name for herself, and she has a growing business. Eliza is great at what she does, and part of her will always want to solve crimes.

There’s no way she could be happy just being the wife of a superintendent in New York. She wouldn’t be able to fit in with the other wives, and I think it could end up causing problems for her marriage to William. Ultimately, her career is where her heart is.

Why she should: Alexander Blake doesn’t want to work with her

Of course, with the way Alexander Blake has pushed her to one side, Eliza is worried about her business. If she is going to live a life as a spinster, she needs to know that it was all worth it. So far, it’s proving that it isn’t.

If Blake doesn’t want her around, what is there in London for her? If her business fails because of Blake, what’s the point in sticking around? Maybe she should leave and be with the man who wants and loves her.

Of course, this is just for now. Who knows what the rest of Miss Scarlet season 5 holds? We could see Blake realize that Eliza isn’t the usual private detectives he’s worked with.
