Eyes are on Cruel Intentions season 2. After all, it’s coming up to the time that Amazon would consider announcing renewal or cancellation plans for it.
The first season of the Cruel Intentions movie reboot dropped on Thursday, Nov. 21. It came out as a binge-watch, and I will say that that probably didn’t help the series. Look, there’s something to be said for weekly releases when it comes to getting the attention of the right people.
November was a busy month for releases. Cross performed well as a binge-watch because of all the hype around the series. There wasn’t that same hype and attention for Cruel Intentions, and it has me worried.
Cruel Intentions season 2 may not happen
I’ll be honest and say I’m not expecting the series to get a renewal. The release of it was too quiet. Amazon didn’t do a great job at promoting the show, leading to some of those who were waiting for it not to even realize that it was out!
The first season didn’t quite hit the mark that the movie did, either. It is a slow burn, but it’s a little too slow when it comes to the twist and shocking turns that the 1999 movie brought us. It doesn’t quite have the steam that was promised to us.
Prime Video struggled with a fellow movie reboot, I Know What You Did Last Summer. That failed to capture what made the movie so great, leading to its cancellation after one season. I fear that the same will happen with Cruel Intentions.
There’s still plenty of story to tell in Cruel Intentions
However, the showrunners, Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, have said that they have plans for more seasons, according to Screen Rant. Because they didn’t really know how many seasons they could get, they split the school year up into sections. We’re not even up to Halloween yet, and it turns out that the showrunners have some plans for a costume party. Of course, a second season is needed for that.
"We’ve divided the school year up into four or five sections, and we definitely need to get to graduation, but we’re very slow moving. We haven’t even gotten to Halloween."
Considering the show didn’t kill Lucien off at the end of the first season—breaking from the movie—it hints that there is clearly more scandal and drama to come.
Amazon will take a look at the viewership to determine if the series should be renewed. It hasn’t showed up on the Neilsen charts for streaming just yet, which isn’t a good sign, but it’s impossible to know how a show actually performed on a streamer because the companies don’t release the data. With the quiet release and not so many people talking about it, I’d say that Cruel Intentions season 2 won’t happen.
Cruel Intentions is available to stream on Prime Video.
