Cruel Intentions and 3 other disappointing romantic shows from 2024

There were some great romantic shows in 2024, but there were also some flops. Here are the four most disappointing romantic shows from 2024.

While some romantic shows like Bridgerton capture our attention and love immediately, there are others that just flop. Flopping happened with a few romantic shows from 2024, and we’re looking at the biggest.

These shows flopped for a few reasons. Some of them just weren’t needed, while others just didn’t quite get the spark that was needed between the couples. Then there were others that could have been great had the writing been better.

When we say flop, we’re looking at the quality of the series. Sadly, LAID may be classed as a flop as it didn’t seem to find its audience, but I saw it was one of the most underrated shows of 2024 rather than a flop.

Cruel Intentions

What’s the deal with rebooting classic movies and shows? Amazon has done it with a couple of movies now, and the rebooted shows have never quite hit the mark. Cruel Intentions starts our list of biggest flops of 2024.

This romantic series didn’t not hit the mark in terms of quality. There wasn’t really much of a spark between Caroline and Lucien, and things between Annie and Lucien weren’t quite there. On top of that, the show’s message is dated. Cruel Intentions worked in the ‘90s, especially with the cast that it had, but this sort of series just isn’t needed in today’s world.

The Sex Lives of College Girls

The first two seasons started off well, but this third season hasn’t quite met the same standard. The witty banter isn’t quite there anymore, and some of the storylines are starting to drag. The pacing in the third season premiere even felt a little rushed without there seeming to be the need for it.

Maybe some of it hasn’t been helped by the departure of Reneé Rapp. The show is losing steam, and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that season 3 is the last. I do feel bad for the series, though, as it was one of those hit hard by the writers strike.

Baby Reindeer

Okay, so not technically a romance show, but more of an anti-romance show. It still deserves a place on this list. There are elements of the series that I liked seeing—showcasing the dangers of stalkers and what can actually happen to men is important. That being said, this series was a little too much at times.

It’s hard to tell what was based on reality and what was fictionalized and sensationalized for TV. Sure, it was Richard Gadd’s own story, but just how much of that happened? There are already claims—although it’s hard to believe all of them as well!

Doctor Odyssey

Look, I love the hilariously weird medical calls on Doctor Odyssey, but when it comes to the romance, this show is a huge missed opportunity. There was this chance to show a polyamorous relationship, but the show did us all dirty.

Okay, I actually respect that Max says that he wants a traditional relationship. At the same time, the idea of Max and Tristan getting involved with Avery is just too absurd. Actually, it’s the fact that Max and Avery got involved with each other that is the wildest part, as they know it’s completely against the rules and there wasn’t all that much chemistry between them in the first place. While the series isn’t technically in the romance genre, it has enough to put it on this list.
