Ibi Zoboi's Pride to transition from page to screen in new film adaptation at Netflix
There's another book-to-film adaptation in the works at Netflix that we can't wait to see. The streaming giant is reportedly in early development on Pride, a film based on the 2018 YA romance novel of the same name from critically acclaimed author Ibi Zoboi. We shared everything we know about this upcoming romance movie right below.
Pride is described as a reimagining of Jane Austen's most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice, but it's set in a modern, urban setting. Karen Joseph Adcock, who is best known for writing for TV shows like The Bear, How I Met Your Father, Swarm and Yellowjackets, will pen the script. However, a director and cast have not been attached yet.
Alloy Entertainment and the Obama's Higher Ground are the production companies behind this adaptation. Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton are producing for Alloy Entertainment, while Vinnie Malhotra, Anikah McLaren, and Mark Wright produce for Higher Ground through the company’s deal with Netflix.
Pride is set in the gentrifying neighborhood of Bushwick in Brooklyn, New York, and centers around an Afro-Latina teen named Zuri Benitez, who finds her life changing when the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street. She initially wants nothing to do with one of the family's teenage sons, Darius Darcy. But as they spend more time together, their relationship evolves, and they eventually fall in love.
Back in 2020, HBO announced plans to adapt Pride into a series, but plans fell through, and Netflix ended up taking over. But instead of turning the book into a series, the streaming giant decided to adapt it into a movie.
This movie adaptation announcement comes only a week after Netflix announced it was developing a new Pride And Prejudice series. The streamer previously adapted Austen's Persuasion book into a romance movie that was released in 2022.
