There are some great rom-coms out there, and LAID is certainly one worth watching. The series is on Peacock, and with the way the first season ends, we’re left wondering if LAID season 2 will happen.
The first season dropped in full on Thursday, Dec. 19. It did drop with minimal fanfare, which was disappointing considering how fun the show was. This does have us worried about the future of the series.
The LAID showrunners want a second season
When talking to The Direct, showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford shared that they would like another season. They think this show could go for “a couple of seasons,” and it’s clear that there is more to tell. I love that they say “a couple of seasons” as it means that they do know that there is an endpoint somewhere.
Maybe this could help them land that second season. Peacock could say that they have one more and that’s it, just to wrap up Ruby’s story rather than leaving it with a cliffhanger.
However, the showrunners also said that they crammed in as much as they could into the first season. There was more that they wanted to do, but they did everything that they could in the eight 30-minute episodes that were available to them.
What do the Peacock viewing numbers look like?
Like so many streaming platforms, Peacock doesn’t release the viewing figures. This can make it hard to tell if a show will be renewed or not. However, I have to say that the little chatter about LAID online is concerning. It would suggest that the show didn’t find its audience.
I think part of the problem was the binge-watch model. I personally don’t like the binge-watch for the future of shows. Something has to be heavily hyped to get people tuning in for all of it. If people don’t tune in right away to a bingeable show, it tends to get forgotten about because there aren’t the weekly drops to remind us that the show is on.
Peacock hasn’t had the best success with the binge-watch releases in the past. Just look at One of Us Is Lying and how the second season didn’t get the attention the first season did. There are some exceptions, but the lack of chatter about LAID makes me think that there won’t be a second season.
LAID is available to stream on Peacock.
