When it comes to relationship growth, Levi has had some of the most and the best in Grey’s Anatomy. We’ve seen a boy become a man, and Levi’s exit storyline was just so adorably bittersweet.
Now let me say that I love that James chose to quit his job and follow Levi. Considering the two have only known each other for a few months, this was a huge step to take. Uttering the L-word at the end and having that romantic kiss leaves us hoping that Levi and James will make it work in Texas.
However, it’s a relationship that we won’t get to see blossom. We won’t get to see more growth for Levi, and it’s just too little too late in the world of Grey’s Anatomy.
Levi is secure in his feelings in Grey’s Anatomy
When we first met Levi, he was straight. At least, that’s what he said he was, and it’s probably what he thought he had to be for the longest time. Having his coming out story happen over the course of the beginning of his storyline was everything we needed.
We got to see him explore and grow. Nico wasn’t the best guy for that, especially at first, but at least we got to witness it. So many people supported him once he came out, and it was the sort of experience that many viewers needed to see.
However, Levi didn’t have many serious relationships. He wanted them, but he couldn’t quite find someone to settle down with. It looked like he was regretting some decisions when he found out Nico was with someone else and expecting a baby with the guy, but it gave Levi more time to grow and figure himself out.
Levi deserved better in Grey’s Anatomy
Jo was right in her comments about Levi’s relationship growth since he joined Grey Sloan Memorial. Now we’re at the point where he was able to voice what he wanted in a relationship and figure out how much he cared about someone. He thought about running and throwing it all away, scared that long-distance wouldn’t work, but in the end, he decided that James was worth it.
Fortunately, James felt the same way. In fact, James felt it so much that he’s quit his job and will move to Texas.
That’s great, but Levi deserved so much better. Not from James, but from the writing. This is the story of the storyline we should have seen last season or even the season before. Levi has such a beautiful and big heart that he’s deserved love for so long. The writers have never given him it, and now we’re getting it just as he’s leaving the series.
In a way, it’s a good thing since we don’t have to deal with drama and breakups. At the same time, we need to see these sorts of loves blossom and grow. We need to see Levi win in terms of relationships and a man who loves him. Once again, Grey’s Anatomy has given us something we need far too late.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC. Catch up on Hulu.
